Lakshmi Maxxing: The Goddess of Wealth, Beauty & Abundance

I’ve been wanting to talk about the viral “Lakshmi Maxxing” trend because, honestly, it got under my skin. As an Indian immigrant and yoga teacher living in America, I’ve seen plenty of examples of cultural appropriation in yoga, but reducing Lakshmi to an aesthetic of beauty, pleasure, femininity, and abundance felt like a particularly deep violation of something that is sacred and deeply meaningful to millions of people. In this episode, I want to give you some context so that when you come across something like this online, you can recognize what’s happening and engage with these traditions more respectfully.

I take you through some of the major Hindu goddesses, including Lakshmi, Saraswati, Durga, Kali, and Parvati, and explore what they represent beyond the simplified versions we often see on social media. We look at Lakshmi and her eight forms, the relationship between prosperity and dharma, Shakti and the divine feminine, and the many layers behind these deities. I also share some of the ways Hindus actually relate to and offer reverence to these goddesses through puja, offerings, fasting, ritual, gratitude, and surrender.

Most importantly, I want to leave you with a reminder to go deeper. These goddesses are not manifestation tools, personality types, or shortcuts to money, beauty, fame, or abundance. They are part of living traditions with profound cultural and spiritual meaning. If you’re engaging with these elements of Indian culture through yoga, take your time, learn from authentic sources, and approach them with discernment and respect.
